According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the NFL found 11 of the 12 Patriots’ footballs used in Sunday’s AFC title game were underinflated by two pounds of air each, known as PSI. He says the investigation is continuing as to how the 11 footballs became underinflated. The NFL requires balls to be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch and weigh between 14 and 15 ounces. -WEEI
My only questions are; why didnt the refs notice this? Wouldn’t they have noticed this sort of thing since they grab the ball after every single play and re-spot the ball? You would think if it was something that noticeable someone whose profession revolves around this would notice… Also, I hope the NFL also grabbed the Colts footballs as well to see if maybe they were deflated because of the cool air? 11 of the 12 balls being under inflated certainly could be because of that theory, but to confirm that we purposely did this, I would assume they would have to use the Colts balls as well… Fact: when the air temperature drop, PSI drops..
I don’t like to point fingers or say “hey they did it too”, but you gotta assume this is one of those rules (12.5 to 13.5 psi) that they just let slide, Aaron Rodgers stated that he likes his footballs over inflated… See video here..
The NFL needs to diffuse this real quick or this is going to be a huuuuuge distraction leading up to the Super Bowl. It’ll be the only story heading into this game and its all that will be talked about during the Super Bowl Media Day.
Also as of this AM, the Baltimore Ravens are also now claiming this is something they noticed as well… PLEASE, get over the fact that you lost will you?
Lets all hope this gets silenced very quickly and we don’t face any repercussions from it… GO PATS!!!
