FORT MYERS, Fla. — There’s a San Diego Padres scout here taking a close look at Pablo Sandoval, post-back injury.
The Padres have had problems filling their third base void. The fact that they are watching Sandoval the next couple of days — he went 0 for 3 in a minor league game Monday and is scheduled to start for the Red Sox Tuesday for the first time since going down with back stiffness — may or may not mean anything, but they’re certainly leaving all options open
The Padres have been open to trading veteran starter James Shields, who also has a big contract, in the right type of deal. The Red Sox and Orioles have been both linked to Shields, who went 13-7 with a 3.91 ERA last season and allowed a major league-high 33 homers.
This is the ultimate dream come true if the Padres take Sandoval off our hands, a gift from god if you will. Sandoval is damn near close to losing the position anyways to Travis Shaw and if the Sox can miraculously pull off obtaining basically a #2 starter in James Shields then this is the best case scenario. Sandoval has been an absolute horror show both at third and the plate. He’s fat, he’s a mess, he boots balls all over the place, and he is overpaid.
Shields is 34, he is a work horse and he has pitched with success in the American League East. If the Boston Red Sox can unload a guy that they probably wish they could release but instead get a pitcher in return, then please get it done before they change their minds.. Please take this hunk of lard off our hands, if it means I have to drive him there then count me in…
