Trading Pierce and Garnett to the Nets for the Nets future first round picks seemed like such a genius move at the time. The two were near the end of their careers and the Nets weren’t getting much better any time soon. The Celtics were primed to get some talent in the future with the picks whether they drafted talent or traded the picks.
And then last night happened. The long awaited draft was a major dud for the C’s as they took Jaylen Brown out of Cal. Brown is a good player, he was voted Pac-12 Freshmen of the Year, but he is not an immediate help to this Celtics team. Brown is a average shooter at best but a solid defender. The Celtics have that already. Why did they draft something that they have a surplus of? Scouting report on Brown states his jump shot needs a lot of work. This is alarming.
You always take the best available player in the draft and Ainge failed to do that. Brown was predicted to go anywhere from 8-12 but the C’s took him at 3. My first thought with the pick was that Ainge had a deal worked out with some other team and that was the guy they wanted. That’s the only thing that made sense to me.
Then with the #16 pick, they draft Guerschon Yabusele. What? I’m not going to pretend to know this guy or anything about him, but when I see almost everywhere that he is a 2nd rounder, why the hell would you take him with the #16 pick? It makes no sense.
The Celtics had a huge opportunity yesterday to make moves and nothing happened. They drafted 8, I repeat 8 players yesterday and did nothing to help this team immediately and better them from being a one and done team in the post season next year. The only thing they have on their side going into next year is experience from the current guys they have. They have the cap space, they have a ton of money to spend, I guess the plan is to suck for Tatum next year?
This Celtics team is too good to be bad and too bad to be good. They are in limbo right now and nothing will change unless a major deal is done. This is Boston, this isn’t Memphis, you make moves and get things done to make yourself a contender year in and year out.
Beyond disappointed with the Celtics yesterday. I just want Brady on the field slinging it and I need that now.
