According to Mike Reiss of ESPN, Malcolm Butler wants to be paid more. Who can blame the man? The Pro Bowler and 2015 Super Bowl hero was one of the top corners in the league last year and is due to make just $600 thousand. Butler was present today for the team’s first day of mandatory minicamp. Butler called his absence on May 26th a big misunderstanding and cited a family issue for his absence.
The top 10 highest paid corners in the league all make more than $10 million. The most recent paycheck went to Josh Norman, who signed a 5-year $75 Million contract with the Redskins. This makes it very likely that if any extension were reached, Butler would be somewhere around $10 million a year. The Pats can afford to wait if they want because of Butler’s restricted free agent status. However, someone might want to start getting his wallet out.

Dont’a Hightower, Jabaal Sheard, Rob Ninkovich, Sebastian Vollmer, Marcus Cannon, Logan Ryan and Jamie Collins are all free agents after the upcoming season. Scary is it not? Many of these guys are the backbone of the young up and coming defense. Not knowing how much longer Tom “Terrific” will be in New England makes signing some of these guys pivotal. The most notable guy on that list is Jamie Collins. Collins has remained quiet about his contract situation, unlike Butler, but a pay raise is coming. The 26-year-old linebacker has a cap hit of just $1.2 million. Collins earned second-team All-Pro honors from the Associated Press last year. That combined with the fact that the top 11 linebackers in the league all make more than $9 million a year, means that Collins will not be a cheap re-sign.
In all likelihood, the Patriots will not be able to keep all of these guys. However, it is pivotal that they open up their wallets and pay for at least Butler and Collins. These two guys are necessities for the Patriots defense. Butler’s top cornerback talent is so important in today’s game. Look at the way he was able to shut down a guy like Odell Beckham Jr. Without a guy who can cover the other team’s best receiver 1-on-1, the Patriots pass defense will lack. Same goes for Collins.

His freak athleticism makes him an unstoppable force at the linebacker position. Let’s hope that the Pats decide not to get cheap and just pay their freakin’ players. I do not want another Asante Samuel or Wes Welker situation.
Brady has continued to take pay cut after pay cut for this exact reason. So they can sign the guys who can help him win Super Bowls. With the amount of time left Brady has left in question, the Patriots just need to suck it up, pay their players, and get Brady his fifth ring. Once that happens, Brady will have won more Super Bowls than any quarterback ever, undoubtedly making him the GOAT that we all now he is. So Patriots, just open that oven and start giving away that dough.
