The Boston Red Sox have acquired IN/OF Michael Martinez from the Cleveland Indians for cash considerations. The move was to acquire bench depth according to manger John Farrell. He is batting .283 on the season with 1 home run in 32 games. The Red Sox also added infielder Aaron Hill last night from the Brewers in exchange for two prospects, pitcher Aaron Wilkerson and second baseman Wendell Rijo.
It is clear that the Red Sox Felt as though they had a depth problem. They really did not give up anything, so I like the deals. It feels like that whenever anyone gets hurt, it is a significant blow to the Sox. Hopefully, these two trades will help that. The problem with this team though is still there pitching. If nothing is done about that, it does not matter how much positional depth you have. Please Please add some pitching. It is getting frustrating to watch Clay Buchholz give up 5 runs in the first inning every game. Even David Price, who the Sox paid loads and loads of cash has an ERA close to 5. With six all-stars, there are guys like David Ortiz on this team having phenomenal seasons. Unless something is done, their pitching staff will ruin all of it.
