Malcolm Butler left New Orleans without a deal and the hottest story of the off season continues on for the Patriots and their restricted free agent, Malcolm Butler.
It’s surprising to hear that many other teams do not have interest in the free agent, and perhaps it has something to do with the 1st round tender the Patriots slapped on Malcolm, meaning any team that signs the corner away from New England would have to give the Patriots their first round draft pick.
At this point, it doesn’t make any sense for the Patriots to trade away Butler to the Saints. It’s speculated that the Saints would not give up their #11 pick for Butler, but would trade away their #32 pick for Butler. So if you are the Patriots why would you trade Butler for the #32 pick when you can just let him sign with the Saints and you could get their #11?
The reason is simple really, the Patriots are possibly just gauging Butler’s market value and will do 1 of 2 things, either match the Saints offer and Butler stays in New England, or they simply do not match the Saints offer and let Butler sign with the Saints (Hello #11 draft pick). If the Patriots trade Butler to the Saints, they would simply just be doing the Saints a solid in return, after all, Bill and Payton have a close relationship.
The Patriots never over pay for players, it’s just not in their DNA, they’ve been known to let players go out and gauge their value, they’ve done it with McCourty, Edelman, Hightower and numerous other players, I’m getting the feeling this is what they are doing with Butler too. It’s all part of the process Malcolm, don’t get too frustrated. You got another ring coming your way.
