With Malcolm Butler possibly being sent to New Orleans, the Patriots are going to have a big hole to fill at the cornerback position. One of the names being tossed around is recently released CB Darrelle Revis.
According to reports by both the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe, the Patriots being a landing spot for Revis is becoming a very real possibility:
From the Boston Globe:
Don’t discount the return of Darrelle Revis, now a free agent after being released by the Jets. One league executive said the Patriots “are the only team that makes sense” to sign Revis, as not many teams have a need for an expensive, aging cornerback with questionable work ethic. But Belichick could get the most out of Revis and find a way to use him — maybe not as a starting cornerback, but certainly as a depth piece at corner or strong safety.
And signing Revis would be a great way for Belichick to stick it to the Jets, one of his favorite pastimes. The Jets owe Revis $6 million in guaranteed salary (with offset language), and the Patriots could potentially get Revis for $1 million-$2 million and have the Jets pick up the rest of the tab, which would delight Belichick and Patriots fans to no end.
From the Boston Herald:
Revis could return a second time at a cut rate, if he’s motivated, and Belichick believes he had something left. If he truly wants to resurrect himself, if he wants to prove he has something left, and wants to cement his Hall of Fame credentials, Foxboro is the only place for him.
There have been so many people saying ‘no thanks’ or ‘no way’, I get it, Revis left, you’re hurt about it, he declined last year, but motivation is a pretty powerful thing. The Jets stink, plain and simple. Revis coming back, and getting in shape, would be exactly what he needs to resurrect his career. He’s 31, he’s not 38. He does still have something left in the tank. If Revis comes back at the league minimum, there’s no reason to not take him back. You bring him back, see what he has, if he has it, fantastic, if not, you cut him. It’s a win win. If you just say ‘no thanks’ I’m left with no choice but to assume you only watch the games because they win.
I would love nothing more than the Patriots to pick Revis back up while the Jets continue to pay him a boatload of money for Revis to turn around his career. It would be the ultimate Belichick move. Needless to say, the Jets coaching staff isn’t very good. Belichick would know how to use Revis to best utilize him.
