According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, the Patriots are exploring other quarterbacks to bring in should the Patriots decide to move Garoppolo
Boston Herald – For a team that allegedly isn’t going to trade quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the Patriots surely aren’t acting like it.
The Patriots are exploring their options among backup quarterbacks who are set to become free agents, according to a source. The only logical explanation for this is they’re laying the groundwork to bring in a third quarterback in the event that they trade backup Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason.

This is going to be one of the most interesting stories all Summer long, what will the Patriots do with Jimmy Garoppolo. The back and forth reports of him being traded to being kept are going to grow old on all of us real quick.
Earlier this week, Adam Schefter reported that the Patriots were not going to trade Garoppolo. Could that have just been a move by the Patriots to increase Jimmy’s value, possibly.
Next year is the last year of Garoppolo’s deal. The question remains, will the Patriots decide to hang onto him and work out a deal before he becomes a free agent, franchise tag him and pay him $25m to be a back up for a couple season, or let him walk completely.
The thing hurting Jimmy now with his trade value, with only 1 year left on his deal, a team has to look at him as a potential one and done rental. So there’s risk to any team that decides to trade for him.
It’s very possible the Patriots restructure Brady’s contract, perhaps move some money to this season, so reduce his salary down the road to afford the possibility of having a backup QB that is the future and afford that.
The Patriots really believe Garoppolo is the future, they may have to pay a pretty penny for him to ride pine until that time comes.
