On Wednesday, the Patriots signed veteran wide receiver Andrew Hawkins to a 1-year contract. At 31-years-old, it was the only contract that seems plausible for a season in which ‘Belichick the GM’ seems to be going all-in on. Hawkins was so excited about joining the championship franchise that he posted a fantastic video of him already working out with Edelman and Amendola.

After signing Brandin Cooks, the Patriots added youth with Malcolm Mitchell in hopes to keep the wide receiver core young and fresh. The only problem here is the grey haired receiver’s that are reaching the end of their “peak.” Julian Edelman has been one of the most explosive slot receiver’s in the NFL over the past few years. Only probably for Jules is he just turned 31 and years before when he was a free agent, his market was pretty slim. The only teams that showed interest in him outside of New England was the Giants and Ravens. Edelman fits in the Patriot’s system and that’s why he will stay put, for now.
The other “seasoned” Patriot we have to look at is Danny Amendola who is also 31-years-old. Amendola was signed after the departure of Wes Welker in hopes of him fitting into the cleat’s Welker left behind. Unfortunately for Danny, he hasn’t come close. Sure he’s been clutch in situations where Brady has needed him. He has a TD in Super Bowl 49 and 51 including the game-tying 2pt conversion to tie Super Bowl 51! That’s just casting a bright ray of sunshine over a dark cloud of inconsistent seasons and injuries. In his four years as a New England Patriot, he has racked up 1,724 yards and 10 touchdowns.
That’s an average of 431 yards and less than 3 touchdowns a season which seems easily replaceable for the Hoodie. Edelman may not produce the sexiest touchdown stats, but he backs it up with yards and catches. Now, Hawkins only had 1,623 yards and 7 touchdowns over the last 4 seasons, but that’s without Tom Brady as his quarterback because lets not forget, he used to drape a crap colored jersey across his 5’7″ stature.
It’s simple really. If the 53-man roster was constructed today, the wide receiver’s that would make the cut would be Edelman, Hogan, Cooks, Mitchell, Amendola, Hawkins and Slater. Yes, we all know Slater is a special teams guy, but he is always listed as a wide receiver on the Patriots depth chart. That is seven wide receiver’s on the depth chart and Belichick will not start the season with seven wide receiver’s. He’s also not going to place a 31-year-old, who is making over a million dollars, on the practice squad which not to mention would include him cutting one of the younger guys from the practice squad just to make room! Someone’s gotta go.
His cops eating donuts video with Edelman along with his gritty on-field personality has been great over the last 4 years, but winning comes first, it’s the Patriot Way. Don’t believe me? Ask Drew Bledsoe, Willie McGinest, Vince Wilfork, Richard Seymour, Lawyer Milloy, Mike Vrabel, Asante Samuel, Ty Law oh and the Super Bowl hero, Adam Vinatieri….this list can go on and on. The most important thing here is even after those big name Pats players took their last snap in a Patriots uniform, the team has continued to win because after all, that’s what it’s all about. The only hope I see for Amendola dawning a Patriots uniform this season is if he starts on the PUP and Hawkins doesn’t live up to his potential causing him to be cut and freeing a roster spot back for Danny. Let’s go PUP!
