The NBA Draft is tomorrow night, the Celtics have loads of assets, and trade rumors are flying around left and right. Now is such an exciting time to be paying attention to the NBA. So without going on and on about how great the NBA Draft week is, I’m going to just get to it. A few days ago the Celtics dealt the 1st pick to the 76ers for the 3rd pick and a future first, but they’re not done yet. Below you will see all of the latest rumors surrounding your Celtics, with my thoughts:
Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics: There are all sorts of rumors flying around here. It’s been widely reported that Phil Jackson is looking to get Porzingod off of the Knicks and then draft Lauri Markannen in the 1st round. The thought here is that maybe the Celtics will deal the 3rd pick, their own pick next year, and someone like Terry Rozier to the Knicks to land the Latvian star. It’s been reported that Phil Jackson is asking for an arm or a leg, but I’d be willing to bet that in the end he’ll take a pretty small offer to get a chance at both Josh Jackson and Markannen in the draft this year. If I’m the Celtics, I’d be all over KP right now.
Jimmy Butler to the Celtics: This is a name that has been linked to the Celtics for a couple of years now. It got reported earlier in the week that the Bulls offered him to the Celtics for the 3rd pick straight up and the Celtics declined. If that is true, what a horrible mistake by the Celtics. Regardless, I just think the Celtics should stay away at this point. If you’re only giving up the 3-pick then that’s a quality deal for the 27-year old, otherwise I wouldn’t bite.
Anthony Davis to the Celtics: Another guy that has been long linked to the Celtics is Anthony Davis. This deal would quite literally take an arm and a leg to get done, especially after the Pelicans went out and got Boogie Cousins last season. In order for this to happen the Celtics would have to give up the 3rd pick, next years Nets pick, next years Laker pick, the 2019 Memphis pick, and maybe more. It’s just way much to give up and people should stop being silly.
Celtics Sign Blake Griffin: With Blake Griffin becoming a free agent this summer, there have been talks that Boston could be a good landing spot for him. This makes a lot of sense, as the Celtics clearly need a big-man and they have plenty of cap-space. My issues with these rumors are that Blake is injury-prone, they want the money for someone else (see below), and they could well draft a power forward with 3rd pick (also see below).
Celtics sign Gordon Hayward: This has been a deal in the making since Brad Stevens signed on to be the Celtics head coach. There is an incredible connection between Stevens and Hayward, the Celtics need his scoring and defense, and the Celtics have the money. It makes too much sense. Only question is if Hayward is ready to leave Utah or not.
Celtics draft Josh Jackson: Josh Jackson is one of the guys that the Celtics are rumored to be taking with the 3rd pick in this years draft. The small forward is an excellent defender and rebounder. However, he has no jump-shot and has shown many character issues. Drafting him in the 3-spot could be a major mistake for the Celtics.
Celtics draft Jayson Tatum: Tatum seems like he may be the guy for the Celtics, assuming they keep the 3rd pick in this years draft. The 6’8″ freshman out of Duke has the length and versatility to either play the 3 or 4 for the Celtics and provides a lot of the go-to scoring that the Celtics need. Also, unlike Jackson he is a high-character guy. If I’m the Celtics and I keep this pick then I use it on Tatum for sure.
