So Footlocker dropped a commercial today that at first glance, was just a couple draft prospects talking about their fathers and about father’s day. Then in comes Lonzo Ball with possibly the funniest and best on camera athlete performance I’ve ever seen:
I used to think that Lavar Ball was just an arrogant overly involved father, but I’m beginning to realize he might be a genius. Hear me out:
This commercial proves to me how self aware Lavar Ball actually is, and how everything he does is so perfectly calculated. Like when you watch this commercial, it becomes obvious that Lavar is completely understanding of how ridiculous everything he says he does is. He knows his antics are wild, but he knows they work. He knows this is a dead time in sports media, and he’s doing everything he can to keep him and his son’s name on the front page of ESPN daily. And on top of all that, its working.
Its obvious now that Lonzo and Lavar are going for sort of a good-cop, bad-cop, type dynamic, where people hate his father, but then feel bad for Lonzo and sort of hope his career goes well. This commercial perfectly humanizes Lonzo, and makes Lavar seem a little more relatable, as anyone who played sports can relate to that over the top parent that’s on every team.
Also the commercial is just flat out funny. Lonzo had perfect comedic timing and the monotone voice completely worked. This was funnier than 95% of SNL skits in the last 10 years.
I really have no opinion on Lonzo as a basketball player, as the Celtics are going to take Fultz #1, so I don’t care, but I hope he stays around the league long enough that we get some more Lavar moments. The NBA has gone soft lately with villains and rivalries, with everyone joining one team, so its nice to see someone we can rally around and hate.
