My 13 year old inner child is really sad today. AOL has announced that on December 15th, they will be axing AOL Instant Messenger.
It’s a sad day for kids that grew up in this era, AIM was life back in the day. It was the original text messaging. It was Twitter before Twitter was Twitter. Those away messages were as thought out as tweets. It’s what brought text lingo to life. It originated brb, lol, and a/s/l. Hearing your friend come online and the door opening sound made you giddy. And there was no better tantrum than signing off line during a fight and making the door slam sound. Then there was always the weird friend who kept signing on and off, opening and slamming the door that would just piss you off. It’s what you did from when you got home from school, until you went to bed at 1:30AM. And SmarterChild was the original GOAT.
It’s all the nostalgia I could ever imagine and in two short months, it’ll be dead. AIM built the foundation that is my life today. Don’t call me, text me. I’d rather type to you than talk to you in person. You know why? Because I can take my time to think about what to say. So today, I say this, Rest In Peace sweet baby and goodbye AJT2525
