NJ.com:Former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano will stay at Ohio State and remain its defensive coordinator, according to Sports Illustrated’s Bruce Feldman, after reports indicated he was bolting the Buckeyes to become the new defensive coordinator in New England.
The news comes a day after Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left the Indianapolis Colts at the altar in stunning fashion, reneging on an agreement to become the team’s head coach after the Colts announced he was coming in order to stay with the Patriots.
The difference here, of course, is the Patriots never announced Schiano’s arrival to replace new Lions coach Matt Patricia. And McDaniels’ change of heart left his potential Indianapolis assistants in a lurch. That’s not the case here, so it’s tough to hammer Schiano the way McDaniels is getting hit.
Not sure what exactly led to a change of heart, but my guess is that Schiano wants to get a college head coaching job. He was ready to go to the dumpster fire in Knoxville to be Tennessee’s head coach, but now he wants to back out of being the DC for the Patriots? Not to mention he has a close relationship with Bill Belichick. I’ll be shocked if he isn’t a college head coach after next season at Ohio State. Now it looks like the Pats will have to turn their focus to LB coach Brian Flores to replace Matt Patricia.
